“It’s official: Croatia is hot,” says Rick Steves, one of America’s leading travel authorities. Croatia is one of Europe’s hidden jewels with five thousand years of history, 1,100 miles of stunning Adriatic Sea coastline and mouth-watering seafood. We’ll begin in Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” a walled, medieval city whose romantic Old Town is a traffic-free jumble of cobbled lanes. Travel the winding coastal road to bustling, vibrant Split. The abandoned palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, built in 300 AD, gave the city its medieval beginning and Split’s old-town square stands where the palace courtyard once stood. Narrow alleys offer both fashionable boutiques and galleries. Plitvice Lakes, one of Europe’s most beautiful national parks and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is comprised of sixteen terraced lakes—separated by natural limestone dams and connected by countless waterfalls—and set in a lush mountainous forest. Next is Opatija—a chic seaside resort of Roman emperors. From here we explore the Istrian Peninsula, jutting out into the north Adriatic, with visits to a typical rural town and a farm-to-table dinner of local wines and delicacies. Neighboring Slovenia is known as one of Europe’s most pleasant destinations and its capital city Ljubljana boasts a Baroque Old Town, Art Nouveau mansions and cliffside castles. Our last stops on this journey are at tranquil Lake Bled and Croatia’s capital, Zagreb.
